Sadaqah jariyah is an investment for eternity. Among the countless forms of ongoing charity that Islam encourages, some stand out for their lasting impact. Here are the seven most meritorious forms.
1. Providing clean water
Water is the source of all life. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ designated water as the best form of charity when asked about it.
❝« The best charity is giving water to drink. »
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Reported by Ahmad and an Nasa'i
2. Building a mosque
❝« Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise. »
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Reported by al Bukhari and Muslim
3. Teaching beneficial knowledge
Beneficial knowledge is one of the three things mentioned in the foundational hadith of sadaqah jariyah.
4. Distributing copies of the Quran
Every letter read from a Quran you have distributed generates rewards for you.
5. Planting trees
❝« There is no Muslim who plants a tree or sows a field, and then a bird, human being, or animal eats from it, except that it is counted as charity for him. »
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Reported by al Bukhari and Muslim
6. Supporting orphan education
Sponsoring an orphan's education combines charity, compassion and investment in the future.
7. Building ablution places
Ablution places enable Muslims to purify themselves before prayer. Every prayer performed thanks to these ablutions generates rewards for the donor.
