Imagine an act of kindness whose rewards never stop. A gesture made just once, but whose benefits touch entire generations and whose rewards continue to accumulate in your book of good deeds, even after you leave this world. This is exactly what sadaqah jariyah represents — one of the most powerful and beautiful concepts in Islam.
The foundational hadith
❝« When the son of Adam dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), knowledge from which benefit is gained, or a righteous child who prays for him. »
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Reported by Muslim
This hadith, reported by Imam Muslim, is the very foundation of the concept of sadaqah jariyah. It teaches us that among the three things that continue to benefit the believer after death, ongoing charity holds the first place.
What makes sadaqah jariyah so special?
Sadaqah jariyah is distinguished from ordinary sadaqah by its durability. When you give a meal to a person in need, it is a magnificent act that is rewarded. But when you build a well that will supply water to an entire village for decades, every sip of water drunk by every person generates a reward for you.
Classic examples of sadaqah jariyah
- Building or contributing to a mosque where people pray, learn and gather
- Digging a well or installing a water tank that supplies an entire village
- Contributing to education by building schools or teaching beneficial knowledge
- Distributing copies of the Quran or facilitating learning of Allah's words
- Planting fruit trees that feed people and animals for years
- Building useful infrastructure like roads, hospitals or ablution places
Sadaqah jariyah in the name of a loved one
One of the most touching and encouraged practices is to give sadaqah jariyah in the name of a loved one, whether alive, sick or deceased. Scholars are unanimous that the rewards of this charity reach the beneficiary by the permission of Allah.
