Umrah is one of the most meritorious acts of worship in Islam. But what happens when a loved one — an elderly parent, a sick person or someone who has passed away — cannot perform this pilgrimage themselves? Islam, in its infinite mercy, provides a solution: proxy Umrah, known as al badal. This mechanism allows a Muslim to perform Umrah on behalf of another person so that they receive the rewards by Allah's permission.
What is proxy Umrah (al badal)?
Proxy Umrah involves delegating a person to perform the rites of Umrah in Makkah on behalf of a third party. The proxy performs the tawaf around the Kaaba, the sa'i between Safa and Marwa, and the supplications, all in the name of the designated beneficiary.
The scholarly ruling on proxy Umrah
❝« A woman from the tribe of Juhaynah came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'My mother had vowed to perform Hajj but she died before doing so. Can I perform it on her behalf?' The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'Yes, perform Hajj on her behalf. Do you not see that if your mother had a debt, you would have paid it? Pay the debt owed to Allah, for Allah is more deserving of being repaid.' »
— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Reported by al Bukhari
